A man has appeared in court accused of murdering a policeman who died while trying to arrest a suspected car thief.

Dog handler Pc Ged Walker, 42, suffered serious head injuries when he was dragged along a road by a taxi at Bulwell, Nottingham, on Tuesday.

The officer, who had a 12-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter, died on Thursday at the Queen's Medical Centre with his family at his bedside.

David Andrew Parfitt, 25, appeared before magistrates in Nottingham on Friday to face a murder charge.

He is also accused of stealing a Vauxhall Astra and taking another vehicle - a Vauxhall Vectra taxi - without the owner's consent.

Mr Parfitt, of Aspley, Nottingham, was remanded in custody.

He spoke only to confirm his name and address and is due to appear before Nottingham Crown Court on 17 January.
