Pampered pooch: But who would win a custody battle?
More than a third of dog owners are prepared to take legal action to make sure they keep their pet if they get divorced, a new survey suggests.

Researchers, who spoke to 750 pet owners, also found that two in five would be willing to pay off partners to keep the family dog.

Some respondents in the Direct Line Insurance survey said they would be prepared to pay 10,000 to keep pets.

One in six has discussed custody of their pet in the event of divorce.

Direct Line manager Chris Price said: "Splitting up with a partner is traumatic enough, but losing custody of a pet makes the break even harder to deal with.

"With these findings in mind, we're reviewing the legal liability in our insurance policy for dog owners to see if it needs to include pet custody battles."
