A golfer set a new world record for the number of times a par-three hole is played in one day.

David Hannis, from Blackpool, holed out 1,080 times in his drive to raise money for charity.

It was the first attempt at such a feat and almost guarantees him a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

Starting at 0700BST on Wednesday, he teed off in groups of 60 balls before heading to the green to sink the putts.

Mr Hannis, 38, took about 25 minutes to sink each batch on the 180-yard 12th hole on Blackpool's North Shore Golf Club.

By 1700, Mr Hannis, who is a scratch golfer, had holed 1,080 balls and called it a day.

He said: "I had no idea how long it would take and I set myself a target of 1,000 holes in a day.

"I have beat that and kept going for as long as I could.

"By the end I was very tired and my left hand was getting sore and blistered."

Mr Hannis, a director of a stockbroking company in Blackpool, consulted with officials from the Guinness Book of Records to lay down the rules of the event.

He hopes his effort will be accepted into the book once it has been put before a team of adjudicators.

Mr Hannis aims to raise about �5,000 from sponsorship which he will donate to Brian's House, a local children's hospice.
