A man from south Wales is seriously ill in hospital after being beaten and stabbed at an illegal eclipse rave party in Cornwall.

The victim in his 20s, who has not been named by police, was attacked by a gang of up to 30 travellers at Trefullock Moor, near Truro, west Cornwall on Wednesday morning.

He has undergone surgery to stab wounds at Treliske Hospital in Truro and is understood to be in a serious condition.

Police say the man had just arrived at the site with a friend when the incident took place.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall police said: "The man had driven overnight and was confronted by a man on arrival.

"He was then hit over the head by one man armed with a wheelbrace.

"That attacker was joined by a group of 30 people and the man was stabbed with a long-bladed instrument, possibly a screwdriver."

Stand-off

Police have not linked the attack to alleged rivalry between separate music organisers at the camp site and officers are continuing their investigations into how the incident began.

On Tuesday, a squad 100 riot officers withdrew from the site after a stand-off lasting four hours, involving a group of 200 travellers as police and officials attempted to seize eight sound systems.
