Primary school children who topped the charts with a tribute to Salford artist LS Lowry, have been asked to reform.

The pupils from St Winifred's School in Stockport provided backing vocals for the Brian and Michael hit "Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs" in 1978.

They have been asked to recreate their performance at an amateur choir competition at the Lowry Centre next month.

The singers, who are now in the their mid 30s, also had a Christmas number one in 1980 with "There's No One Quite Like Grandma".

Soap star

Actress Sally Lindsay, who plays Shelley Lindsay in Coronation Street, was among the singers.

The competition organisers are urging the original choir members to get in touch.

Sophie Balch, Sainsbury's Choir of the Year manager, said: "With over 700 children singing at the Lowry Centre it offers a one-off opportunity to relive the Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs success.

"Having the original St Winifred's School Choir would make it even better."
