A drinking ban has led to a sharp drop in vandalism in a Leicestershire town.

Oadby and Wigston Borough Council says complaints have reduced dramatically since the order was introduced in part of South Wigston.

By banning drinking on the streets it was hoped intimidation and vandalism by youths would be reduced.

The apparent success of the scheme means councillors are considering another ban in part of the Little Hill Estate in Wigston Magna.

Complaints have fallen

The council introduced the ban at the beginning of this year on Blaby Road, Station Street and Canal Street and in Blaby Road Park and the area around the railway bridge.

A spokesman said when the order was first introduced police were confiscating crates of alcohol at a time.

Now, although there are still some problems, the area is much more peaceful.

Now the council is launching a public consultation exercise with a view to making a further order.

This would cover the railway station platforms and the area around the shops and the Viking Tun pub on the Little Hill Estate in Wigston Magna.
